Covid-19 changed the way we lived in 2020, but all was not quiet on the gardening front. We found innovative ways to meet safely, and carry on personal and community garden projects for which the Lexington Council is known. Large groups are not necessary for volunteerism, and individually or in small socially-distanced groups, garden club members planted, weeded, and maintained the gardens in their care. We mastered new technologies (ZOOM!). We survived 2020, in part, because of the simple quiet joy being outside gifts our souls. We survived 2020 because we were still able to contribute to our communities: board memberships, planting bulb drifts around the city, helping establish new gardens, and consulting and offering expertise, to name a few. One very successful venture was Lexington in Bloom (Lite), a scaled down version of our biennial Lexington in Bloom contest. We traveled Lexington looking for front yard gardens and mailed postcards to congratulate those gardeners who took the effort to bring color and design that brightened their neighborhoods and the city at large.
So now onto 2021. There is light at the end of the Covid tunnel and we look forward to seeing each other in person again and planning for this new year. One event we have in store is the return of LCGC’s Open Gates Garden Tour at the end of June. Since last fall, a well-organized team of dedicated volunteers has been laying the groundwork to bring the Tour to fruition. Notices and updates will be available on this site, so stay tuned!
